It’s been an interesting and productive year for
artist here in Hawaii. Me, I’ve been working much of the time on painting
scenes from Hawaii’s past--- I love nostalgia. And in this hyper fast and
glitzy age we live in it is no surprise to me that folks often just want to
kick back and see and recall a simpler and slower age… such as these shown
here

Since then I have been deluged with requests to paint
more nostalgic scenes of Hawaii and of course I will. In fact I have
several in the planning stages now. But as you might imagine it takes a bit
of research to check pictorial facts----- cross checking if possible with
folks who actually recall a place when they were younger. And then finally
constructing a pleasing composition that says in a simple picture ‘this is
what it used to look like back then... .’
It’s a fascinating process and very rewarding for an
artist when you are able to ‘Get it right’ and satisfy those who remember.
That alone is reward enough.
I’ve also painted pieces with a cultural celebration
in mind…by doing several scenes of Chinese Dragon dances…which have always
really turned me on personally and I promised myself many years ago that I
would somehow get that down on canvas with paint…so I did two which I think
are a strong statement about that particular aspect of Chinese culture. In
these two pieces I attempt to depict the drama and celebration of the Dragon
Dance.

Happy New Year

The Way of the Dragon
Coming up in the first week of February is the Punahou
Carnival and Art Show in Honolulu. As one of the featured artists this year
I hope to have five or six pieces on exhibition. Every year Punahou is a
fun and rewarding experience for all the artists who participate. I hope to
see you there. Come say hello, I love meeting art appreciators----bring
chocolate!
